What Is Pramipexole?

Pramipexole - molecular - Pramipexole: A Better Alternative For Cabergoline?

Pramipexole is a prescription drug and is FDA approved.
It belongs to a class of drugs called dopamine agonists. A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way.
Pramipexole works by activating certain receptors in your brain. This helps decrease the severity of Parkinson’s disease and restless legs syndrome.

Furthermore, as a sports supplement, Pramipexole is used to treat high prolactin levels caused by other chemicals.

Dopamine Agonist? What’s that?

The First Question Is: What Is Dopamine?

Dopamine

Dopamine is a chemical that occurs naturally in our body.
It is a complex and key neurotransmitter. Dopamine is responsible for many of our daily physical and mental functions.
Changes in levels of this brain chemical can alter our behavior, movement, mood, memory….
High and low levels of dopamine cause different disorders.

In terms of relation to prolactin levels: when dopamine levels rise, it causes less secretion of prolactin in men!

Dopamine Agonist

Dopamine agonist

Dopamine agonists (DA) are medications that work by imitating the actions of dopamine when levels are low.
These medications improve condition-related symptoms by fooling the brain into thinking dopamine is available.

Dopamine agonists are prescription medications that can be used to treat a variety of conditions that are a result of dopamine loss.
Research indicates there are two major groups of dopamine receptors: D1 and D2 with subgroups.
They are responsible for many behavioral, hormonal, and muscle related effects in our body.

There are 2 kinds of dopamine agonists. We subdivide them into ergoline and non-ergoline derivatives.
In conclusion, the major difference is the binding to receptors and the side effects tend to be different as well as the potency to treat different kind of symptoms.

Why Do We Replace Cabergoline?

Cabergoline

Cabergoline is a ergoline derivative dopamine agonist.
It is used to treat hyperprolactinemia (high levels of prolactin in your body). This happens when your pituitary gland makes extra prolactin.
In men, high prolactin levels can affect reproduction and cause sexual issues. These issues include a decreased sex drive and not being able to get or keep an erection.
Also, it might cause gyno.

Cabergoline is very effective at this, but comes with a lot of side effects.
Most of these side effects are common for all ergoline derivative dopamine agonists.
Some of these side effects are: nausea, constipation, headache, dizziness, weakness or lack of energy.
But it also tends to have some more serious side effects:

  • Scarring of tissues in your organs, such as your heart, lungs, and kidneys:
    • trouble breathing
    • shortness of breath
    • a cough that doesn’t go away
    • chest pain that doesn’t go away
    • stomach pain
    • swelling in your legs, ankles, or feet
  • Heart valve problems:
    • swelling in your arms, legs, hands, or feet
    • trouble breathing
    • changes in your heart rhythm
    • chest pain
    • cough

So we think there are safer options. Options with less severe side effects that can fight high prolactin levels in an effective way as well.

So Welcome, Pramipexole!

Pramipexole: A Better Alternative For Cabergoline?

Again, Pramipexole is a prescription drug and is FDA approved and is a dopamine agonist.
In contrast to Cabergoline, it is a non-ergoline derivatives. These non-ergoline agonist are not associated with a risk of heart or lung damage.
Additionally, they are overal safer to use as a dopamine agonist than the ergoline derivative counterparts.
In addition, The European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use recommends restricting the use of medicines containing ergot derivatives.
In short, we should no longer use these medicines to treat several conditions…

So Pramipexole is the safer way to combat high prolactin levels.
It has a long half-life and is safe for human use.
The only know side effects are: nausea, loss of appetite, dry mouth…
One side effect can be annoying, depending on timing of your dosage: you get tired when you take your dosage.
But, to combat this side effect, you can take it before bedtime so it will be even a helpful sleep aid.
Furthermore, it might increase your libido and sexual performance. So, that’s another benefit to take your dose before bed.
