WHAT IS TAMOXIFEN?
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex), like other SERMs we will explore, is a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators and is a class of drugs commonly used for the treatment of breast cancer, osteoporosis, and infertility in women. Tamoxifen is also employed by male bodybuilders, who use it to restore their endogenous hormone production after SARM/Steroid cycles (Post-Cycle Therapy) as well as to prevent and reverse gynecomastia.
TAMOXIFEN IN BODYBUILDING
SERMs can stimulate endogenous Testosterone production in males by blocking the hypothalamic estrogen receptor. This action tricks the brain into thinking that estrogen levels are low, and since estrogen is primarily acquired through the aromatization of Testosterone, the hypothalamus secretes GnRH which stimulates the pituitary causing it to release LH and FSH which boost Testosterone levels and sperm production.
IS A TAMOXIFEN PCT SAFE?
SERMs in general have been shown to be relatively safe and well tolerated and Tamoxifen is no exception to this. It has been clinically studied for treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at increased risk of fracture. Tamoxifen shows no breast or endometrial stimulation and in the first two years with patients taking drugs like Tamoxifen, the small increase is better in venous thromboembolism, and similar in the long term to other SERMs. [R]

TAMOXIFEN BENEFITS
TESTOSTERONE PRODUCTION
Tamoxifen can increase Testosterone levels by stimulating the release of LH and FSH [R]. Off-label use of Tamoxifen by bodybuilders also confirms this phenomenon, with thousands upon thousands of men reporting good results and a complete reversal of their testosterone suppression after a PCT with Tamoxifen.
TREATS GYNECOMASTIA
Tamoxifen is effective at preventing gynecomastia and reducing the size of already existing breast tissue [R]. It has been used by thousands if not millions of bodybuilders to prevent gynecomastia and to reduce its size if it has already developed.
REDUCES CHOLESTEROL

TAMOXIFEN PCT SIDE-EFFECTS
IGF-1 REDUCTION
Tamoxifen (so far) is the only SERM that can lower IGF-1, one of the most anabolic hormones in the human body. This can limit gains in muscle mass, but it can easily be avoided by using MK-677. [R]
MOOD SWINGS AND SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION
While on your Tamoxifen PCT, it can cause terrible mood swings, anxiety, and depression in a very significant percentage of users.
Despite providing a modest increase in sexual function in some users, it is also possible for SERMs in general to have a negative impact on sex drive and erectile function. Mind you, many of the effects you’ll read here are empirical (not proven clinically).
HOT FLASHES AND NIGHT SWEATS
Tamoxifen can cause both hot flashes and night sweats in a small percentage of users [R].
BLOOD CLOTS
Tamoxifen was proven to increase the chances of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in elderly women with breast cancer. Mind you, these studies have been done compiling data from Danish and Taiwanese databases. However, if you have a family history of DPV or PE, stay away from Tamoxifen and only use it for short periods of times if absolutely necessary. Fortunately, this is a rare side-effect, even in women with breast cancer who take Tamoxifen for years [R].
MILDLY LIVER TOXIC
Tamoxifen can potentially increase AST and ALT levels, but having a significant degree of liver toxicity due to most SERMs is extremely unlikely. Running N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) during PCT is always advisable [R].
HOW A TAMOXIFEN PCT WORKS
Tamoxifen works by selectively blocking estrogen receptors such as those found in the breasts and the hypothalamus. By antagonizing ERs in the breasts, Tamoxifen prevents estrogen from attaching to these receptors and causing the growth of breast cancer in females or gynecomastia in males.
Blocking ERs in the hypothalamus allows Tamoxifen to trick the brain into thinking that there is no estrogen in the body, causing it to stimulate testosterone production.
Even though all SERMs have the same mechanism of action, their effects differ slightly, making some more suitable for the treatment of gynecomastia, and others more effective at restoring / boosting testosterone production. Coming up, we’re going to show you where Tamoxifen really shines.
WHICH SARMS NEED A TAMOXIFEN PCT?
TAMOXIFEN PCT FOR SARMs
Not all SARMs require a Tamoxifen PCT. It’s best to run a post cycle therapy (PCT) after a SARMs cycle to get your natural testosterone levels back up to normal. While on cycle, your body will lower testosterone production because of the SARMs binding to androgen receptors, blocking out testosterone. Certain SARMs are more suppressive to testosterone production than others, although most of them are not as suppressive as an average steroid.
The only reliable way of determining whether a SARM needs a PCT or not is to get a blood test. If a blood test just isn’t in the cards for your research, it’s best to err on the side of caution and match the appropriate SERM with your SARM/AAS cycle.
The most common and our most recommended PCT consist of Tamoxifen. In circumstances where the cycle can be very suppressive, we recommend a double-PCT approach of Clomiphene (Citrate) and Tamoxifen PCT (we’ll discuss this shortly).
Some factors that affect these decisions could include type of SARM/AAS, dosage, cycle length, and genetic predispositions. We go into greater detail in our PCT for SARMs article.
SARMS THAT REQUIRE TAMOXIFEN
MILDLY SUPPRESSIVE CYCLES
For a mildly suppressive SARM cycle (Ostarine, ACP-105, Andarine, AC-262,536), Tamoxifen isn’t necessary but we always recommend it, especially in the absence of blood work.

MODERATELY SUPPRESSIVE CYCLES
