What Is Cervical Cancer?

Cancer is a disease in which cells in the body grow out of control.
Cancer is always named for the part of the body where it starts, even if it spreads to other body parts later.
When cancer starts in the cervix, it is called cervical cancer.
The cervix connects the vagina (birth canal) to the upper part of the uterus.
The uterus (or womb) is where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant.

All women are at risk for cervical cancer. It occurs most often in women over age 30.
Long-lasting infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer. HPV is a common virus that is passed from one person to another during sex.
At least half of sexually active people will have HPV at some point in their lives, but few women will get cervical cancer.

How To Prevent Cervical Cancer?

National Cervical Cancer Coalition

There are two ways to “prevent” cervical cancer.
The most important one is to get vaccinated against the types of HPV that most often cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.

The other step is to make sure you get regular screenings from the age of 21. Like this cervical cancer can be detected soon so your chances of full recovery are a lot better.

Also, make sure you follow a healthy lifestyle.

National Cervical Cancer Coalition

The National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC) was founded in 1996 as a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to serving women with, or at risk for, cervical cancer and HPV disease.
In 2011, NCCC merged with the American Sexual Health Association (ASHA), a nonprofit with a long history of educating and raising awareness on sexual health issues.

The NCCC helps women, family members, and caregivers battle the personal issues related to cervical cancer and HPV and advocate for cervical health in all women by promoting prevention through education about early vaccination and regular screening.

Their services are:

During January they have a special cervical cancer awareness month to do even more extensive outreach of cervical cancer.
Like this, they want to make clear this still is a big problem and that there are easy ways to reduce the risks of all kinds of cervical health problems.
